Join AIGA West Michigan and our friends at the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives for the third of a 4-part event series featuring a special presentation of work from the Archives. Curated into four unique gallery shows, attendees will get a special look into some of the work that has built the legacy of great design right here in West Michigan.

We’re excited to bring a special sampling out of the Zhang Legacy Collections Center at Western Michigan University for this one-night-only experience. Curated by Barbara Loveland and Linda Powell, 2017 AIGA West Michigan Fellow Award Recipients, the show will all be centered around the theme of Discovery and will exhibit over 40 pieces from the archives collection that demonstrate the possibilities beyond ink on white paper. You’ll see materials printed on or produced from cardboard, colored paper, plastic, metal, neon, magnets, fabric, wood, vinyl… and dirt.

Also:
Jon Henderson, former WMU Graphic Design professor and former Director of Creative Resources at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City will be joining us at this event! Jon was instrumental in creating the Graphic Design curriculum at Western in the 1960s which replaced Commercial Art. At Hallmark, he not only provided a program that inspired and motivated the creative staff of over 600 artists, designers, and writers in residence, he was responsible for organizing the Hallmark archives. In addition, Jon was the catalyst for the Graphic Design Archives here in West Michigan. While downsizing his own collection of design work, he suggested, “take this stuff and start an archive at Western”.

About the Archives:
Chock full of work dating back to the 1940’s, The Archives makes both physical artifacts and digital representations available to design professionals, educators, students, business people, researchers, and others interested in the rich legacy of graphic design, paper manufacturing, and printing in West Michigan.

Interested in a sneak peak into some of the work ahead of time? Take a look through their website and get excited for August 12!

A special thank you to Newell Brands and Central Michigan Paper for their wonderful support and partnership.
